The limestone-enriched pastures, the temperate Irish climate and the horsemanship skills which have been passed down through generations make Ireland the most horse friendly place on earth. For centuries the horse has been synonymous with Ireland and the Irish. The Irish Draught farmed for its temperament, durability and athleticism has over the centuries evolved into Ireland’s unique contribution to the equine world.
Furthermore the world famous Irish Sport Horse, the result of crossing the Irish Draught with the Irish Thoroughbred, thus adding the speed and stamina influence, have dominated on the world stage since records were first recorded. While, latterly, owning or riding an Irish bred Horse has had huge prestige attached to it, this is not a new concept. The Duke of Wellington, victorious in the Battle of Waterloo, rode an Irish horse, Copenhagen, which was bred in County Cork and Napoleon’s horse Marengo was also Irish, being bred in Co Wexford, the ancestoral home of the Doran’s. To this day the legacy continues.
